Age and youth to meet in New Delhi to resolve Indo-Pak issues | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 9: The wheel has turned full circle during the last one year. In the middle of July last year the foreign ministry level talks between the then Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and India's External Affairs Minister, S.M. Krishna, ended on a bitter note after the former tried to slight the latter. However, within a couple of days Pakistan Foreign Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, played the role of a cake seller and removed traits of bitterness from the mouth of Krishna. And when Hina Rabbani Khar, acting foreign Minister of Pakistan, lands in New Delhi in the third week of the current month for talks with her counterpart, S.M. Krishna, it would be an interaction between youth and age. While Hina is 34 year old Krishna is 79, more than double the age of petite Rabbani who seems to be the opposite of rough and tough former foreign Minister, S.M. Qureshi. Hina had been elected to the Pakistan's National Assembly on PML(Q) ticket in 2003 and remained the member till 2007. However, when fresh elections were announced in 2008 Hina was denied the ticket by the PML(Q) and she contested the election on PPP ticket and had cake-walk win. Basically she is a business woman and is married to a businessman. But the grains of politics and political vision has been inherited by her from her father, Noor Rabbani Khar, a prominent feudal politician and from her uncle, Mustafa Khar, former Governor of Punjab. After having completed BSc(Hons) from Lahore University Hina has done MSc Management from the university of Massachusetts. Against this Krishna is a law graduate and has received higher education from a university in Texas. By profession he is Attorney-at-Law. Compared to Hina, who has a brief political career Krishna has been in politics since 1962 when he was elected to the Karnatka Assembly. In 1971-72 he was elected to the Lok Sbha and later returned to the state politics to become Chief Minister of Karnatka between 1999-2004. Between 2004 and 2008 he was Governor of Mahar ashtra. However, in 2009 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha and since then he has been the Minister for External Affairs. No doubt when Krishna was married in 1964 Hina Rabbani was not born but the way the cute daughter of Khar has performed first as Minister of state for commerce and now as Minister of State for External Affairs Hina's calibre is no inferior to Krishna. As the Acting foreign Minister the upcoming talks between her and Krishna in New Delhi between July 25 and 26 will be the first test to the political calibre of Hina Rabbani. Recently she did not react as her predecessor used to do when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wanted Pakistan to leave Kashmir alone as Islamabad has many problems to face. While rejecting Manmohan Singh's insinuations Rabbani had a polite dig at the Indian leaders when she said "we do not believe in reactionary diplomacy." In the same statement she had claimed the CBMs between New Delhi and Islamabad were making headway. It depends more on Hina than on Krishna to carry these CBMs to their logical conclusions. During the last one year, when the bilateral talks were resumed, New Delhi has kept its cards open and it is now the turn of Hina Rabbani to open her cards which her predecessors had kept close to their chests causing confusion, nothing else but confusion. In fact bilateral talks between India and Pakistan have been held at different intervals and at different stages right from 1949 onwards, including the prolonged dialogue between Sardar Swarn Singh and Z.A. Bhutto in 1963, but these talks have neither reduced trust deficit nor promoted cordial ties between the two neighbouring nations. Instead of clinching peace these talks failed even to prevent Pakistan from opting for a proxy war against India since 1989. And the two sides have been bleeding as a result of this proxy war and export of terrorism to India in Jammu and Kashmir. Will Hina succeed where her predecessor had failed in promoting peace in the subcontinent? Will she make a firm commitment on ending export of terror to India? It will be watched with interest. |
