Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 9: The catchy slogans of autonomy BY National Conference (NC) has failed to cut much ice in valley with majority of Kashmiris totally fed up with the policies and programmes of Omar Abdullah led Government which they alleged instead of solving the problems of common man has compounded them with its wrong policies and programs.
The people had pinned high hopes in coalition government headed by Abdullah which assumed office in 2008, said Mir Ghulam Rasool a veteran trade unionist and a social activist. It was a general opinion that Abdullah being a representative of youth will prove better than his predecessors and bring a revolution in bringing state on the path of progress and prosperity but he has totally failed to come upto the expectations of the masses in general and youth of the state in particular, he added.
Mir said the promises made by Abdullah during the time of elections proved hollow as not even a single promise was kept by him after taking reigns of Government in 2008. ``The people of the Valley can't befooled on the hollow slogan of autonomy for ever as we have been hearing this right from 1953'', he added.
Supporting his views Abdul Satar a local leader from home constituency of Abdullah said that people are fed up with the polices of present Government as it has failed on all fronts. The corruption is rampant in the state and there is no one in the administration who can hear the woes of poor and downtrodden people in the state.
The rising unemployment has been a cause of concern among the youth and being the representative of the youth Abdullah failed to address this problem. There is total favoritism in making appointments while those having no sources are ignored altogether, he added.
Sattar said the another cause of concern among the common Kashmiris is the price rise of essential commodities and failure of Government to maintain a check on market. The Government has fixed rate of mutton Rs 140 per kg while the butchers sell the same for Rs 160 to 170 per kg, he added. The rate of LPG and other essential commodities have also touched the sky leaving common man totally disturbed.
Substantiating his views Mohammed Shaban another trade unionist from Sumbal Sonawari alleged that total nepotism prevails in the state. The rising prices has been the main concern of the masses and there is a lot of resentment against the coalition in general and NC in particular in Valley. This is the reason that the candidates supported by coalition got a drubbing in the recently concluded Panchayat elections in Kashmir, he added.
He said the Government and its ministers are organizing public rallies for their publicity while there is no progress visible on ground. The NREGA scheme is a source of minting the money by bureaucrats and ministers as the common man is not getting its proper benefit. The 40 percent money is utilized on ground while 60 percent goes down the drain, he added.
He said recently Government increased stamp duty by thirteen fold and the stamp duty on which one had to spend Rs 80 now costs Rs 1300. This is totally loot, he added.
Shaban said the Anganwari has also failed to serve the purpose as the workers appointed in it are mostly from cities and not from the rural areas where such centers have been established.
Maintain that the situation could turn better in rural areas if Panchayts are given basic powers but we apprehend that the government will empower them, said Ghulam Rasool.
He said the salaries of legislators and ministers were increased many fold but there is no money with Government to pay arrears of the pensioners and employees. He accused both centre and state government for prevailing mess in the state saying had they adopted right policies and programmes there would have been no secessionism movement in Kashmir.
