| Heavy rains lash Gujarat; over 25,000 people evacuated | | | Ahmedabad, July 30: Authorities have evacuated more than 25,500 people from low-lying areas in South and Central Gujarat following heavy rains in the region, even as an alert was sounded in villages on the banks of River Narmada.
"An alert has been sounded in villages located downstream the River Narmada (in Bharuch district) as the Sardar Sarovar Dam is expected to overflow by afternoon today," Additional District Collector J P Solanki said.
"A total of 7,192 people have been evacuated from about 17 villages of Bharuch district," he said.
Of these, 4,805 persons were evacuated from Vagra, Valiya, Ankleshwar and Bharuch talukas till this morning. In addition to this, 2,387 people from Jambusar town are also being evacuated today as a precautionary measure, he said.
Solanki said people living in villages along the River Narmada have been alerted and have been asked to move to safer places by this afternoon.
Around 10 people have died in rain-related incidents since the last two days. Eight deaths were reported till yesterday and two more drowned in Anand district.
A total of 7,400 people have been evacuated in Navsari district even as the Poorna River continued to flow at the danger mark.
According to flood control sources, 1,406 people have been evacuated from 13 villages of Anand district, while 1,155 people from seven villages of neighbouring Kheda district of Central Gujarat have been moved to safer places.
Meanwhile, 1,537 persons from 11 affected villages of Surat district and 190 persons of five villages in Panchmahal district have also been shifted, flood control sources said.
According to a report from Vadodara, District Collector Rajeev Topno said a total of 6,650 people from 22 villages of the district were evacuated to safer places following heavy rainfall and flooding.
Most of the evacuations have taken place in villages of Padra and Karjan Taluka, he said.
In Vadodara, 558 persons in low-lying areas were shifted to safer places and have been provided food, city Municipal Commissioner Rohit Pathak said.
While Vadodara has recorded seven inches of rainfall, Padra taluka recorded 18 inches and Dabhoi Taluka 13 inches.
Many areas in Vadodara are water-logged and people staying in low-lying areas on the bank of River Vishwamitri have been asked to remain on alert.
Several areas in the city including Jawaharnagar, Jetalpur-Alkapuri Road, Kishanwadi-new VIP road have been flooded and traffic has been suspended on these routes.
According to a report from Bhavnagar, the gate of the Saurashtra Dam has been opened due to heavy inflow of water. A report from Rajkot said Bhadar Dam in the district had overflown.
Meanwhile, traffic on national highway number eight is moving at a slow pace due to water-logging in certain areas near Surat, Kheda and Anand.
Saputra-Ahwa State Highway in Dangs has been closed to traffic due to flooding. Similarly traffic on Dakor-Nadiad State Highway has also been halted, the sources said.
Several Mumbai and Delhi-bound trains from Gujarat are also running behind schedule, Railway sources said.
