PDP will not allow J&K resolution to get derailed: Mufti | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 10: Asserting that peace and reconciliation agenda being pursued by his party is a irreversible process, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today said that there was a need for the parties across the political spectrum of the country to evolve a consensus on resolving Kashmir issue with Pakistan. Addressing a public meeting here today, Sayeed said that strengthening of democratic institutions and emergence of a strong civil society was a good sign and the country has to respond to the prevailing positive atmosphere in the region He observed there was no substitute to resolving the Kashmir issue that had dampened the immense economic potential of South Asian region for decades and people of Jammu and Kashmir were the worst victim of this problem. “All sections of political opinion have to lend a helping hand in the process of solving Kashmir issue”, he said and appealed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and principal opposition BJP to respond positively to the prevailing situation. Sayeed especially mentioned the historic announcement made by the then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during his Kashmir visit in 2003. He said that Vajpayee’s announcement to extend hands of friendship towards Pakistan had boosted the peace process. Former Chief Minister stated that the peace process with Pakistan has to be \above party politics and it has to be driven by long term goals of conflict resolution and cooperation. “Biggest ever Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) which has positive effect on improving relation between two countries was the opening of crossing points on Line of Control (LoC)”, he observed and expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for taking personal interest in the opening of Muzaffarabad-Srinagar and Rawalakote-Poonch roads. Reaffirming commitment of his party to aggressively pursue the agenda of reconciliation and development in the State, Sayeed asserted that his party, with the support of the masses, wouldn’t allow the peace process to be derailed. “As the peace process was pioneered by the PDP, party would take this process to the logical conclusion by establishing lasting peace in this region. He reiterated that agenda of the PDP was not to grab power but to establish sustainable peace in Jammu and Kashmir by fulfilling wishes and aspirations of the all sections of the society. “Since its formation PDP has been working to create an atmosphere of reconciliation and to restore a sense of security and fearlessness among the people”, he said and observed that during the PDP-Congress regime in the state the situation was positively transformed in this region. Highlighting achievements of PDP-Congress regime in the State, Sayeed said, “With its three years regime the PDP has carved out a new path of peace and progress in this region". He further added that in short span of time his party has laid a strong foundation of mutual trust and confidence among all regions of the State. Rangil Singh, spokesman T S Bajwa, vice-president, Balbir Singh, general secretary, Daman Bhasin, Falail Singh, Hussain Ali Wafa, Jagjit Singh Jagga, Bharat Bhushan Gupta, R K Bali, Suram Singh, Surjit Kour, Rajinder Manhas, Abdul Rashid Malik, Shahzad Khan, Capt Anil Gour, Ashok Jogi Bharat Choudhary, Som Nath and others also addressed the function.
