When autocrats will lay wreaths on graves of martyrs
7/11/2011 12:39:23 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 10: Three days from now, Kashmiris will observe martyrs' day. Pro-Indian parties and separatists will got the graveyard to lay wreaths on the graves who `laid down their lives' while fighting autocracy.
The Chief Minister and other senior leaders of the National Conference will also visit the graveyard to mark the `beginning of the end of autocratic rule'. This political drama or to put it plaInly the `exploitation of 1931 martyrs' has been going on unabated for the past eight decades.
The commoner on the street has a question in mind. Has autocracy really ended? On July 19 last year, some quarters talked about change of guard in National Conference. This is what the people close to the organization expected. They eagerly waited for the day when the affairs of the organization would no longer remain a `private affair' of the Sheikh family.
However, the `plan' was shelved for obvious reasons by former Chief Minister and Chief Patron of the organization, Dr Farooq Abdullah. He was crude whie making clear that the leadership would not go out of the Sheikh family.
Sensible people criticised the crude statement but nothing moved. Autocratic National Conference alone can uphold democratic values in Jammu Kashmir, a college teacher sarcastically commented.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is popularly known as Papa Daughter Party in Srinagar. Why should Mahbooba Mufti head the party ? Senior workers have started questioning.
The situation in the separatist camp is no different. The Mirwaiz family is as autocratic as the Sheikh family. The leadership has remained in the Mirwaiz clan for the past one hundred yearrs.
Abdul Gani Lone was succeeded by his sons. They head their respective versions of the Peoples Conference. And, according to reports Syed Ali Geelani's son, who came back from Pakistan lastg year is being seen as a strong contender to succeed Geelani although the elderly leader does not like him.
Notwithstanding their `autocratic mindsets' all of them would be seen at the martyrs' graveyard on July 13. The poor martyrs shall take turns in their graves.
