Diabetes Update held for doctors Over 15% Diabetes prevalence in Jammu: Dr Jitendra Singh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 11: A Diabetes Update programme for physicians, medical practitioners and MD Scholars was held here today wherein renowned Diabetologist, author, Professor and National Diabetes RSSDI Executive Member Dr Jitendra Singh was the chief faculty. While stating that even in Jammu the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus was over 15 percent, Dr Jitendra Singh delivered a lecture on the most recent concept of severe hypoglycaemia or drastic fall in blood sugar due to over treatment or otherwise leading to damage of various organs particularly heart and brain. Dr Jitendra Singh said the understanding of Diabetes has undergone a constant evolution over the last century. In the beginning of 20th century when only a few drugs and insulin were available, the practice was to keep Blood sugar slightly on higher side but in 1990s UKPDS and other international trials emphasised the importance of strict tight control of Blood Sugar to ensure protection of kidneys, eyes and heart but again in the last four or five years it has been noticed that keeping Blood sugar very low can sometimes lead to arrhythmias, irregular heart beats and even heart failure besides irreversible damage to brain. Dr Jitendra Singh stressed on the importance of optimisation of Blood Sugar level and individualising it according to person’s age amount of medication, condition of his organs and other factors. The ultimate “Mantra” however is lifestyle modifications, regular exercise and stress free routine, he added. The second lecture on the occasion was delivered by Dr Narendra Kotwal, Chief Endocronologist at AFMC Pune, who happens to be the son of soil. Dr Kotwal spoke on a relatively new class of ant diabetic drugs called “Incretins”.
