Next few months to decide AFSPA''s fate in J-K: Army | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 11 Army today said security situation over the next few months will decide the outcome of the consultative process with the Jammu and Kashmir government over revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). "We have given our views to the government (on AFSPA).The consultative process is on and a sustained period of peace over the next few months will certainly be an important factor," General officer Commanding of the Army''s 15 Corp Lt Gen S A Hasnain told reporters at Beerwah in central Kashmir''s Budgam district, 35 km from here. Following last year''s summer unrest, two committees were set up by the state government to study the possibility of revoking the AFSPA from certain areas in the Jammu region and the Kashmir valley. The corps commanders of Jammu and the Valley are members of the committees formed to look into the issue. The Army commander said there was an apprehension of a rise in infiltration by militants from across the Line of Control (LoC) over the next two months as large number of militant camps were still active on the other side. The Corps commander said the check points set up by Army at various places was meant for tracking militants and not to inconvenience ordinary citizens. Responding to a question about him buying the recently released book of hard line Hurriyat conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the Army commander said it should not be seen as a controversy. "There is no controversy in purchasing the book.Geelani is a ''buzurg'' (elderly man) who is espousing his ideas. As a professional, it is our duty to know of perceptions of various people, whether we agree with them or not," he said.
