| Amarnath yatra going on smoothly; unregistered pilgrims more | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 11: The pilgrimage to holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas is going on smoothly though unregistered yatris have still outnumbered those having valid yatra permit. Against the proposed 10,000 yatris, 15,000 to 20,000 pilgrims are having darshan of the self-made ice-shivlingam in the cave shrine daily, with the result the shivlingam has started melting. Officials said fresh batches of yatris today left the shortest Baltal and the traditional Nunwan Pahalgam base camps for the cave shrine. Those who left Baltal will reach the cave shrine this afternoon and those who left from Pahalgam will have to stay at Chandanwari, the last motorable halting station on this traditional route. The officials said the pilgrims, who stayed the night on the traditional route, have also resumed their journey this morning. About 2.40 lakh pilgrims, most of them unregistered, have had darshan of the shrine so far. Official sources said due to lack of coordination among the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), security forces, state police and other agencies, the number of unregistered pilgrims has increased with every passing day since the commencement of the 46-day-long yatra from June 29. The Board appealed time and again to yatris to undertake the pilgrimage only after obtaining a yatra permit, which enable them an insurance cover of Rs 1 lakh free of cost. It will also help the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage, it added.
