Why are July 13, 1931 killings important? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 12: Twenty-persons died near Srinagar Central jail on July 13, 1931. Maharaja Hari Singh was not in the state but he immediately ordered investigation into the killings the moment he returned to the Summer capital. Kashmiris have been observing the day as martyrs day. On this day all roads virtually lead to the martyrs' graveyard. The pro-Indian parties go their to lay floral wreaths. The separatists go there to reiterate their pledge to take the movement to its logical end and the confused commoner also goes there to offer fatehah (prayers) to the martyrs. Why are July 13 killings important by the way? On April 29, 1865 twenty-eight shawl weavers died near Zaldagar in old Srinagar. They were protesting massive hike in taxes. Scores were taken into custody. This incidentally was the first organised protest of workmen anywhere in the world. The Chicago incident that left three workers dead happened twenty years later. The concept of Trade uninosim, therefore, owes its origin to the State of jammu Kashmir. But the world observes May 3 as workers day. The killings of April 29, 1865 , therefore, are more important than july 13 killings. But nobody in the state even knows about the incident. The persons who died on that day were not as lucky as those who fell on July 13. They had a leader like Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah who made July 13 a state holiday. Sher-e-Kashmir has dedicated his auto-biography Aatish-e-Chinar to the memory of July 13 martyrs. The shawl weavers also had leaders. One of them was Abli Baba. He was arrested and died while in custody. He did not survive to turn the incident into a `national tragedy'. And then the shawl weavers also remained mum. Few of them know about the incident. |
