| US aid cut to Pak may harm India | | | Though New Delhi is happy over the US decision to cut 800 million dollar military aid to Pakistan,the step is fraught with serious political implications which could have adverse impact on India.During the last 30 years or so Pakistan has been a major beneficiarty of the US military and non-military aid.First the aid came when Islamabad was to help Mujahideens in throwing out the Soviet troops.These Mujahideens were supposed to be trained by Pakistani troops and after training receive the American weapons and explosives that helped them in fighting the Soviet forces out of Afghanistan. Then the military aid was given to Pakistan for combating terrorist activities being carried out by the Taliban and the Al Qaeda.However,on both these occasions Pakistan used major portion of the American weapons for equipping militants for launching a proxy war against India,first in Punjab and then in Jammu and Kashmir.Unfortunately Washington remained unmoved by sustained protests by New Delhi over Islamabad's misuse of the American weapons.
Well one need not misconstrue suspension of American military aid to Pakistan as the result of growing ties between Washington and New Delhi.The US Government led by Barack Obama announced suspension of its military aid to Pakistan after Washington was convinced that Islamabad did not take adequate steps for tackling the menace of terrorist outfits like the Talibans and the Al Qada.In fact the straining Pak-US relations was triggered when Islamabad asked the US Government to pull out its troops from Pakistan.Washington had given a 10-point programme for Islamabad to implement and reports said that so far Pakistan has been able to execute three demands.The rest seemed to it unpalatable.No doubt suspension of US military aid was part of Washington's strategy to mount pressure on Islamabad to behave as per the US suggestions,it may not have a healthy impact on the US-Pak relations.Islamabad has already announced that it does not need any American aid indicating that it may mount counter pressure on Washington so that it was forced to resume the aid.
That the aid suspension can have some unhealthy fallout on India is the outcome of fears that Islamabad may solely depend on the Chinese military and non-military aid.Once this happened it may further cement the relaions bet ween China and Pakistan to the disadvantage of India.After the American aid was suspended Islamabad may not initiate operations against terrorists.It was under the lure of military and non-military aid that Pakistan had been left with no other alternative but to strike against the Talibans and the men of the Al Qaeda.Islamabad has already reacted saying that it no longer required military aid from Washington for fighting the Talibans as it had already launched operations against the Talibans in the Swat valley and in Waziristan without the American aid.The opposition and the extremists in Pakistan have welcomed the US aid suspension which clearly indicates that they want the terrorist outfits to grow in strength and size.Once it happened it could pose a major threat to India.There is no doubt that the American military aid was diverted by Islamabad for supporting and aiding terrorist activities in India but the etablishment in Islamabad could be influenced by Washington if Pakistan continued to bank on the US military and non-military aid. Islamabad out of the US influence orbit can leave space for China to set up its military bases in Pakistan thereby adding to the threat perception for India.
