Kashmir: Time for a New Thought Process to Supersede
Ramesh Pandita7/13/2011 10:59:34 PM
As changes time, so change the ideologies and their relevance, what may hold good to you today, may become totally irrelevant tomorrow and this is perhaps how life comes along. An ideology holding significance today may appear extraneous tomorrow and be superseded by a new thought process. We have got a good number of recorded instances with us which uphold the notion of ideological relevance only with time. One can take the case of Russia, it was time when Lenin in Russian enjoyed the stature of almost second to God, so had Lenin’s ideology fathomed deep in to minds of Russian masses and it was time when the same ideology of demigod became irrelevant and the statue of same great leader was not even speared and was pulled down with garland of shoes and that too by those who never lived his era. Not going that far, in Iraq the leader of masses Sadam Hussain met the same fate. Among everything it seems now the turn of Kashmir to overthrow the irrelevant ideology which one or the other way kept Kashmir boiling since India’s independence and its accession to union of India.

Kashmir has been bearing the burnt at the hands of Pakistan since last six decades, and accession of Jammu and Kashmir to the Union of India in 1947 was neither forced nor imposed, but a result of burnt which Kashmir and its people faced at the hands of Pakistan. No body can deny the fact that the process of this accession was a well conceived thought of leaders who enjoyed the following of masses and are still revered for the concern they had shown and the pains they always used to take for the welfare and betterment of their people. The decision of the then Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh to move with the union of India was undoubtedly ratiocinative keeping in view the circumstances under which the decision was taken and if someone disdains with it is just because of his/her myopic vision. To move with the union of India was the only suited option for Maharaja to save his territory and people from the guerrillas of Pakistan, to which I believe people should be grateful for generations together. But the irony is people have not just forgotten the heroics of these great men but due to their improvident ideology are also holding their saviors responsible for the present mess. Eruption of militancy in Kashmir since 90’s is again the case of people falling prey of wrong ideology as such they fail to realize the sacrifices made by their predecessors for them. Ideologies definitely change and do become practically irrelevant with the passage of time but that doesn’t mean it should get superseded the way it is being done in Kashmir. Minds of innocent Kashmiries are more or less hacked, followed by impelled wrong ideology which has given them nothing, except bloodshed, miseries, trauma and what not.
People of Kashmir instead of being indebted have somewhere forgotten the heroics of their predecessors and the need is to remind them that if Kashmir, Kashmiri race, and Kashmiriyat still exists on the globe, it is just because of those forgotten visionary paladins, otherwise the so called well-wisher of Kashmir & Kashmiries (Pakistan) left no stone unturned to outrage the modesty of state and its people from time to time. What’s more surprising is, contrary to following the footsteps of their precursors, the self styled leaders’ vis-à-vis separatists are more engaged in the bloodshed and inflicting sufferings to common Kashmiries. A common Kashmiri, who has yet to attain the independence of food security, is being talked and shown of castles. Separatists themselves know very well that drawing lines alone will hardly serve any purpose but will definitely add more miseries and trauma to their kitty to which they are not aware of. Of the late we have seen the separatist leader Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat has publicly confessed of own people killed by own men for wrong ideology and later leaders of other similar organizations gathered courage to endorse his confession. All this is clearly signaling towards some ideological change in those fractured minds who have been voicing it from behind. Few days back Sayed Ali Shah Geelani, keeping in view the self imposed excruciations of last summer has also appealed to youth of Kashmir to not to indulge into stone pelting this summer. If this appeal of Geelani is sincere and honest to match his deeds then we can say it’s a welcome change.
Looking from Geo-political perspective, Kashmir is important for both India and Pakistan, because no two sane states would ever like to have a buffer-state bordering them. So looking from the strategic point of view, what is more important for both India and Pakistan is to have Kashmir with either of the country, so that danger of Kashmir becoming future Kuwait could be averted?, thereby independence of Kashmir stands no where as same is not viable for both India and Pakistan. On the other hand Pakistan’s support to Kashmir is neither for its independence nor for the welfare and betterment of its people but for its own interest, which unfortunately my fellow brethren couldn’t understand for the last six decades. To help maintain stability in South-Asian region, India has been taking care and looking after Jammu & Kashmir since the last six decades and is fostering it like rest of the states of country with some special privileges which only Jammu and Kashmir enjoys.

India is a magnanimous country but that doest mean one should undermine its magnanimity. Let us not forget the liberation of East Pakistan into Bangladesh, which India materialized. Coming up of Bangladesh on world map corroborates the might of this Sleeping Giant (India). People may see different reasons behind it but the fact is, India could have never afforded to have de-facto Pakistan at its eastern side and for that reason I won’t count Kashmir as a bone of contention for India. Indian is powerful enough to impose its will upon others which it never does. Besides, those who have ever been in Pakistan and its occupied Kashmir know very well that it is a good contrast of India and Indian side of Kashmir

At the same time if we look at Kashmir alone, for being devoid of natural resources the region in itself is not self sufficient to support it own needs. It can not produce enough to fill the stomach of every Kashmiri for a whole season; even the daily consumables are to be supplied form other parts of the state and country. So, prior to talking about independence, it would be better for separatists to ensure the common Kashmiri of his safety and security from all sides. Instead of talking high of freedom struggle they should work towards growth and development of state. In every respect Kashmir as a region is wholly solely dependent and to continue Kashmir remain as part of India is not only in the best interest of Kashmir but for Pakistan as well, which Pakistan understands very well. Besides, had these separatists been true to their cause, instead of letting there children to go abroad for higher studies they would have made them to join freedom struggle and would have never let teenagers of poor and marginalized families to die alone and to try to ride high on the death of these innocents is disgusting and loathsome and to cash on their deaths seating in cozy air-conditioned vehicles and homes with Z+ security is felonious and full of shame for separatists.
Somewhere I have apprehensions that separatists themselves don’t understand the meaning of freedom in its real context, had they been aware of it, their first and foremost priority would have been to work for the welfare and betterment of Kashmir and its people. Besides, one doesn’t see any curbs on the freedom of a common Kashmiri; they enjoy every right which any other Indian national enjoys with some special privileges. To end with, what all we can do is to pray almighty, to let good sense prevail upon one and all, to be able to distinguish between good and bad, friend and foe, so that peace and tranquility may return to valley soon. And the fact is history doesn’t take much time to repeat itself, time will come when the ideology of separatists will be overthrown for a change which is inevitable.
