Jammu on high alert after serial Mumbai blasts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, JULY 13: Soon after three near-simultaneous powerful blasts rocked film city Mumbai at rush-hour between 6.50 pm to 7 pm today, killing nearly 20 people, police were put on high alert in the winter capital city here and vigil was stepped up at all vulnerable places. As footage of news channels showed dead and injured being dumped in vehicles, cops here were put on high alert. Security was tightened around the Amarnath yatra base camp on Canal Road and in the city areas where cops could be seen checking vehicles and frisking commuters and pedestrians. Security was also heightened in market areas of Jewel, Shalamar, City Chowk, Raghunath Bazar and Gole Market, Gandhinagar. People were asked to exercise a high degree of caution, to monitor surroundings and to minimise their presence in market areas. All the exit and entry points to the city were plugged and additional nakas laid on the routes leading to the Amarnath yatra base camp, religious places, including the famous Raghunathji temple, and police and army installations. Police nakas were also laid on Sidhra-Narwal road stretch and other outer city roads. As part of enhanced security bandobast, border police also laid multiple nakas on the possible infiltration routes and on the sprawling Nikki Tawi river bed. Official sources said BSF too had further stepped vigil all along the International Border to foil any infiltration bid by the Pak-based militants. Sources said police headquarters also flashed messages to all the district SSPs in the evening to ensure fool-proof security arrangements in the areas that fell under their respective jurisdiction. Since Amarnath pilgrims use the 90 km Lakhanpur-Jammu stretch of the highway to reach the base camp here, heavy police deployment had been on it to avoid any untoward incident. Most of the Lakhanpur-Jammu road stretch falls under Kathua and Samba districts. When contacted late tonight, SSP, Kathua, J L Sharma said, "We do not want to take any risk in view of the ongoing Amarnath yatra." Heavy deployments had been made on the highway and in the border Kathua areas, he added. Samba SSP Israr Khan said he had put wireless fitted police patrol gypsies after every 4 km on the highway from Ghagwal to Bari Brahmana. "We have sounded an alert and every step has been taken for the safety of Amarnath pilgrims," he added. He said infiltration routes had already been plugged and seven nullahs that flow across the border were also under their round-the-clock vigil. SSP, Jammu, Anand Jain said, "We have sounded red alert in Jammu after blasts in Mumbai and further strengthened nakas." Cops also carried out checking of hotels and lodges in the city and asked their staff to remain vigilant of suspicious persons. Sources said border residents too had been asked to exercise night vigil and alert police, or security forces on the sight of any suspicious person. |
