ABVP also takes the plunge, demands establishment of CU | Time For Delhi To Act | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, July 13: ABVP, student wing of the RSS, which remained dormant during the past two years or so and adopted indifferent attitude to the demand in Jammu for the establishment of Central University in Jammu, has finally taken the plunge and warned that it would intensify its agitation in case the Central University is not made functional forthwith. The ABVP also urged the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, to appoint Vice-Chancellor of the sanctioned Central University. It appears the ABVP leadership has finally realized that the student community had not appreciated its indifferent attitude towards the issue. It also appears that it was the fear of isolation and marginalization that has forced the ABVP leadership to make common cause with those demanding establishment of the Central University. The demand put forth by the ABVP, which is coupled with a threat, and similar threats administered by other organizations, including Jammu Province People's Front, Jammu Central University Morcha, the Jammu University Research Scholars Association, the student wing of the Panthers Party, the Jammu Joint Students Federation and similar other student organizations, should induce the authorities to concede the genuine demands. It is a must in the larger interests of the state. For, the failure of the authorities can create a volcanic situation in the Jammu province. There are indications that the situation in Jammu could assume alarming proportions after the educational institutions, particularly the colleges, reopen after summer vacation. Besides, the JPPF has threatened an indefinite fast and the student wing of the Panthers Party has started signature campaign on the issue. It would be suicidal not to take cognizance of these threats and warnings. Statesmanship demands immediate action in this regard. It should be remembered that the authorities have nothing to lose and only to gain if the genuine demands as advocated by the various organizations are conceded. The authorities have not to take a new decision. They have simply to implement the decision they took several months ago. As for the demand for a local Vice-Chancellor, there is nothing wrong with it. Local Vice-Chancellor needs to be appointed because he would be in a better position to understand the local conditions and cater to the educational needs of the student community. |
