Early Times Report
Jammu, July 13: The two day RTC for interlocutors to register impressions this time on fronts other than political in Jammu culminated albeit on caution by some speakers on the political note which put both government and protagonists of so called secularism and pluralism in rather embarrassing position. They were none other than those having affliations with BJP who questioned NC government's position on some key issues confronting the state.
If it was a question from BJP leader Dr Jitender Singh to contest NC led coalition's silence on empoweing Panhayats so far inspite of having elected representatives through polls, the argument was unexpectedly supported by veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyer who has all through been advocating the cause of empowerment of Panhayats at the national level. Dr Singh said holding of panhayat polls after decades was welcome but 'it appeared ironical that those talking loud about autonomy slogan were not ready to give functional autonomy and independence to Panchayats'. Mani Shankar supporting this, called for implementation of 73rd and 74th amendments in the state, something which might not augure well for the ruling clique.
Again it was the BJP speaker who contested and countered the comment of writer from outside J&K Saida Dehlvi in what she stated that there was RSS radicalism spreading in J&K. To this, Dr Jitender Singh contended that even as that would be assumed as true, one needed to have courage and conviction to condemn radicalism in every religion and form. He alleged it was more of Islamic radicalism that state suffered damage on many fronts. Some other speakers added that it were SA Geelani and men of his ilk who in the name of religion were spreading this campaign that Kashmir was faced with cultural aggression and invasion on the points which they are unable to substantiate. Dr Singh without naming any one in particualr said that even in the government hierarchy there were some talking about Kashmiri students facing brunt of 'Hindutva tactcis' in states like MP.......the governmet must address the simliar problem first in own state where even Kashmiri students were facing such tactics in the name different religion...", he alleged.
The BJP speaker also dwelt in detail over regional imbalances in which he said the visible parametres were that of delmitation which reflect gross discrimination with Jammu. BJP MP from outside Raj Sushant who questioned government criteria of spending huge central funds in the name of countering militancy and other fronts. He said this needed to be checked or else J&K would also see emergence of Rajas and Kalmadis in the political circles who squander these funds as these were not reaching for these are meant for. BJP spekaer also scoffed at the Rehabilitation policy for former militants contending this would send a wrong message among the educated youth who are jobless in the state.
