Jammu, July 13: Top class politicians, private motor companies among hundred persons are tax defaulters in the state causing loss to the tune of Rs 600 crore to the public exchequer.
The documents in possession of Early Times reveal that many top dignitaries of the state are tax evaders who are liable to pay to the tune of crores but enjoying the government patronage are hence scot-free.
Sales Tax, which is the essential component of grant-in-aid starved state like Jammu and Kashmir, is worst hit among others taxes.
Though an intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had called for an immediate action against defaulters, the concerned department immediate swung into action, prepared a list of the defaulters and submitted the same to the minister AR Rather through Commissioner Commercial Taxes ,Jammu and Kashmir to crack down on the defaulters.
However the important factor that may keep the things hiding would be involvement of the top political as well as bureaucratic brass figuring among the defaulters.
The matter of sale tax defaulters came to light when former minister and senior Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil reminding ex minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's revolutionary measure to bring social economic transformation back on the rails in the in the state urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take immediate and necessary action against sales tax defaulters.
Sources said that the matter of sales tax defaulters was raised in the state legislature number of times, but nothing concrete came out of this. The documents of the defaulters of above 10 lakh amount which were supplied to the higher ups revealed that about 60 percent defaulters were not traceable in spite of repeated warrant issued against them.
List containing 20 pages of Jammu region revealed that in Jammu alone 212 dealers have defaulted while the number is nearly double in Kashmir region. Members Sangarsh RTI expressing their resentment over delay in realization of sales tax worth crores urged CM to impose penalties for tax evasion.
According to them tax evasion is a kind of fraud or cheating on the part of the tax payer where he or she illegally avoids tax payment, fail to report the exact tax plan to the authorities and last but not the least they report incorrectly to the authorities about the tax payments.
Out of these three cases which comes under the column of tax evasion the most common practice is failing to report the exact cash income by the tax payer. These are not just any other charges that are applied to the taxpayer.
They are actual charges that come under criminal offense. The government imposes strict and serious penalties for tax evasion. If it avoids such penalties for tax evasion then the cases will increase at an overwhelming rate and finally result into lack of funds needed to serve the country. They are of opinion that problem occurs when companies, folks, or any other officially permitted entities purposely keep away from their legal duty, that is tax evasion and the penalties for tax evasion must be no less then severe. |
