Half of July is also over; Kashmir stays calm

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 14: Half of July has ended and Kashmir stays cool, calm and pleasent as well. The separatists have issued no calendar People seem least interested in what the authorities call summer agitation. The Valley teems with tourists. However, restrictions in the shape of section 144 CrPC continue to remain in force for the time being. The authorities, it seems, are scared of allowing five or more Kashmiris to assemble at a place especially in the city of Srinagar.
The authorities imposed un-declared curfew (they like to call it restrictions) in the city. All roads leading to the graveyard at khawaja bazar were sealed to foil Geelani's programme of offering Fatehah at eidgah grounds.
The Valley witnessed agitation in summer for the past three years. The authorities expected yet another agitation this year. To foil the agitation, the authorities took hundreds of youth and leaders into custody. Most of them have been detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) and lodged in various jails of the state.
However, Kashmir watchers have given the credit of `peaceful summer' to the people and not to the authorities. "The people have shown that they are no mischief mongers. they do not agitate for the sake of agitation", they said. People supported the preventive measures taken by the police and the civil administration but expressed serious concern over "unleashing a reign of terror" in the garb of preventing the agitation.
The people have urged the administration to release all the persons who had been put behind the bars to prevent `summer agitation'. "The summer has remained peaceful and the keeping people behind the bars makes no sense", they said.
Interestingly Syed Ali Geelani has strongly sought release of the jailed persons. According to him, police excesses and peace cannot go together.
