Brewing resentment against opposition to acceptance of Devnagri as alternative script | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 14: The opposition to acceptance of Devnagri as an additional alternative script for Nastaliq for writing by the State Government on the behest of separatists and fundamentalist elements in the Valley has drawn a flake from the nationalist forces in the state. While the Hindu scholars from the valley had pressed this demand before the then Union Government in 2001 and the then HRD Minister in consultation with the scholars from Kashmir had agreed to accept the Devnagri as an alternative script for Hindu writers in writing Kashmiri. The union Government at that time had in principal agreed to issue orders for making Devnagri as an alternative script for Hindi knowing Kashmiri writers to write Kashmiri and it had taken the State Government into confidence in this regard. However under the constant pressure of fundamentalists the State Government opposed the move at eleventh hour forcing the Union Government to defer the decision. The move was opposed by the valley scholars at several conferences held in Kashmir and Jammu. The intellectuals organization of Kashmir at that time led by Amin Kamil had strongly opposed the decision despite the appeals of Hindu writers that by considering the Devnagri as an additional alternative script to Nastaliq will not have any ill effect o the Urdu knowing Kashmiri writers. But this request was not considered. It may be recalled that the Government of J&K after independence had adopted Nastaliq as a script for writing Kashmiri instead of Devnagri and Sharda. The Kashmir language which was for centuries been written in Sharda script suffered a set back after adoption of Devnagri script by the Government despite the fact that the Kashmiri was well read in the Sharda script. The decision came as a rude shock to Hindi knowing writers of the state after their pleas to rescind the decision have been turned down by the Government. Since then the Hindi knowing writers of the state have made this demand before the successive State and Central governments. However the Kashmiri scholars continued to oppose the decision at each and every forum evoking a serious criticism from the Hindi knowing writers of the state. This has been the reason that the demand was tooth and nail opposed by the Kashmiri scholars in two days round table conference held here by interlocutors on July 11 and 12 when Dr R L Shant put this demand before the penal. It came a rude shock to the Hindi knowing scholars from the state when a Kashmiri scholar said that for three lakh people there can't be an alternative scholar when 80 lakh people know the nastaliq. |
