BSNL launches 3G services in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 15 (KNS): India’s National Telecom backbone Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Friday launched 3G services in 29 towns and cities of Jammu and Kashmir. However, the service has been launched without video facility.Chief General Manager BSNL J&K Circle, R K Koul told reporters that they were waiting for security clearance from Government of India for launch of video service.
While private telecom operator Bharti Airtel started 3G services in the state in June this year, Reliance Communications launched the service in February 2011.
The public sector BSNL is providing employment to 2675 people in the state. “There are more than 1000 employees in Kashmir division and rest in Jammu division. 22,000 people get indirect employment through BSNL. The 22,000 people include those who are working as franchisees of the BSNL and maintain towers,” Koul said. The CGM claimed that BSNL wasn’t in the state to earn profit. “We are here for supporting social network,” he said. The BSNL has 8,36,144 GSM mobile and 2,15,276 landline subscribers in the state. Koul said that 2011-12 will be the year of consolidation for the BSNL in J&K.
