On 8th anniversary of Kashmiri singer’s mysterious death | Family, journos hold candle light protest | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 15 (KNS): As dusk set off Thursday evening, dozens of journalists assembled in a park here. They hadn’t assembled for any press conference or to cover official or a separatists rally, but to pay tribute to a famous Kashmiri singer, Ghulam Nabi Sheikh. The journalists alongwith family members of Sheikh held silent candle light protest in the park. Sheikh who was called as Mehdi Hassan of Kashmir for his melodious voice was killed in mysterious conditions on the intervening night of July 13-14, 2003 while traveling by train from Jammu to Delhi alongwith his daughter Huma Sheikh and a friend.
Eight years after the tragedy, Sheikh’s family had organized a candle light protest in a park on the banks of river Jehelum. The participants mostly journalists and family members of the deceased silently sat in the park amid a slight drizzle. As candle light protest signifies helplessness, the family of Sheikh decided to hold it. “Sheikh sahib was killed in helplessness and since them our family is helplessly pursuing the case. There was no better way to protest than this,” said a family member of Sheikh. Senior journalist of the Valley, Shujaat Bukhari said that Punjab Government closed the murder case of Sheikh without doing justice with the victim. “We have to join hands to seek justice for Sheikh’s family,” he said.
Another senior journalis, Nazir Masoodi said that the beasts who killed Sheikh should be brought out of the curtains. “To destroy evidences of murder, the killers cremated Sheikh sahib despite being a Muslim,” he said.
Sheikh’s son, Arafat recalled that being immature, he could hardly understand the cause of his father’s death in 2003. “After going through the case, I came to know that the Chandigarh High court refuted the CBI submitted report and termed it fabricated. But after being directed by the same court to re-submit its report, no development took place,” he lamented.
Ironically, no one from Radio Kashmir, Doordarshan and Culture Academy was present in the protest despite Sheikh spending much of his life serving these institutions.
Apart from Gulzar Ahmad Ganie, no veteran singer of the Valley turned up in the protest.
