5 LeT militants, jawan killed in gunbattle | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 15: Five separatist guerrillas and a soldier of the counter-insurgency force Rashtriya Rifles were killed in a gunfight in north Kashmir's Kupwara district that ended Friday evening, police said. "Five militants of the LeT outfit, including three of the outfit's top commanders identified as Abu Hamad, Abu Sakeb and Abu Usman, have been killed in the Maidanpora (Lolab) gunfight which ended here today (Friday) evening. "All the slain militants were foreign nationals. One soldier of the Rashtriya Rifles also died in the gunfight while three others sustained injuries," a senior police officer said. The house which the guerrillas had been using as a fortified bunker was completely destroyed in the exchange of gunfire between the guerrillas and the security forces. Troops of 18 Rashtriya Rifles and special operations group (SOG) of the local police had surrounded a house in Maidanpora village, 84 km from Srinagar, following specific information about the presence of a group of LeT guerrillas inside the house. The operation against the holed-up guerrillas was delayed because they had taken a local woman hostage and the security forces were busy rescuing her before the hiding guerrillas were challenged.
