Doda-Kishtwar farmers want green house technology for walnut production
7/16/2011 9:55:44 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 16:
Since the state of Jammu and Kashmir has the potential of exporting walnuts worth about Rs.two billions the st ate Government has st arted introducing high yielding dwarf varieties of walnut in the Kashmir valley.
Senior Government functionaries explained that the new high yielding dwarf walnut trees start yielding fruit after one to two years of sowing against 10 to 15 years taken by the easting varieties.Secondly the size of the existing walnut trees is so huge so huge that inter cropping is not feasible in the walnut growing areas.
In order to convince farmers about the utility of the new variety hi-tech green houses have been set up in various areas where walnut cultivation was being carried out successfully.
The Department of Horticulture has been organizing visit of farmers to these hi-tech green houses so that they abandoned their reluctance for taking to walnut cultivation which for them was time consuming and an exercise resulting in waste of land under walnut trees.

The Department has started supply high yielding dwarf walnut trees to the growers and experts expect revolution in walnut cultivation within next thr ee to four years so that the annual export figures touched five billion rupees.
However, walnut cultivators in Doda-Kishtwar-Bhaderwah belts resent step-motherly treatment from the state Government on the plea that during the last t wo decades neither any financial nor any technical help had been provided to them for raising high yielding walnut trees.
They said that the stuff produced in Doda-Kishtwar-Bhaderwah areas was inferior in quality with the result "we are not able to export bulk of our produce."Number of farmers wanted the Government to experiment with raising high yielding dwarf walnut trees under hi-tech green house as was being done in Kashmir.
