| Sikh community feels ignored | | |

If not a decisive vote bank, Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir are a force to reckon with. They are spread almost in all the parts of the state despite being just two per cent of the total population of Jammu and Kashmir, as per 2001 census.
Of late, the Sikhs have become politically very conscious and thus making their presence felt in every foray. Not having any consolidated constituency, they have been demanding political reservation in the state legislature as also the minority status. Minority status entails certain concessions to the people and, therefore, this has been a pronounced demand which they highlight in every forum. In Kashmir All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee has been demanding special benefits and relief to the ‘troubled’ community. They are enraged for not being treated as a minority community though the Sikhs in India enjoy this status. The people of this community have been demanding reservation since long, few people from this community shared their views on this:

The successive governments have ignored this community. Over the years we are fighting for our rights but to the ill-fate of the people of this community there is no one to listen to the demands of this community. The community is demanding reservation since long since long as it is a minority community but nothing has been done so far. The centre and state government should take immediate action for the welfare of this community. The government is ignoring the plight of this community since long.

The Sikh community has been demanding for a berth in the state cabinet for the past so many years, but no initiative has been taken till date. There is no Sikh representative in cabinet which surely is a big jolt for the community. There are so many schemes for development that offer benefits, employment programs for the but no policy has ever been enacted .

Sikh community has faced many hardships. The Sikh community has been demanding reservation as a minority community since long but nothing has been done so far. During the autocratic rule, Sikhs were having two reserved seats in assembly one from Jammu and the other from Kashmir. So provision should be made for the reservation of atlesat three seats in the assembly so that this community could have their representative to fulfill their legal democratic aspirations. There is no Sikh representative so the government should take some steps and to provide reservation for this community in assembly .
