Nagrota army garrison vows to double the green gold | | | Early Times Report NAGROTA, July 16: White Knight Corps started a special drive today to substantially increase the green cover in Nagrota Garrison and surrounding areas. A major plantation drive was initiated today by Lt Gen JP Nehra, AVSM, General Officer Commanding, White Knight Corps. In a solemn ceremony near the beautiful manmade lake in Nagrota garrison, the Corps Commander planted a sapling in the presence of a huge gathering of army officers and their families, who later participated in the drive by planting saplings in areas adjoining the lake. The Nagrota Garrison already has about 20,000 healthy trees. Compared to surrounding areas, the garrison already has much better tree cover. The Army has always contributed to the environmental well being of its surroundings. To that end, Nagrota garrison too has planned to plant 10,000 saplings over the next fortnight. This is but a humble contribution to the ‘Green Gold’ of the country from the Army’s side. Speaking on the occasion, General Nehra called upon the soldiers to take the lead in protecting the environment. The GOC said, “Increase in population, vehicles and industrialisation pose a big challenge to the environment. Planting more trees is one of the answers to these problems. We owe to our future generations, that we leave mother earth in a better state. So, plant as many trees as is within your means and nurture them”. Brigadier Sangra, the Station Commander gave a brief on the plantation drive being undertaken. He outlined the plan to increase the survivability of the plants. He also thanked the state forestry dept which supported the drive whole heartedly by providing the required saplings.
