LeT commander Habib's deputy killed in encounter | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 16: A top militant and deputy of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) district commander Habib Gujjar was today shot dead by security forces in a gunbattle at Wattalhal bridge in Kishtwar. The operation was carried out meticulously and there was no casualty on the part of forces, official sources said. A source infomation led a joint column of police, 11 RR and 74 Bn of CRPF to a place of hiding of Habib in the densely forested Wattalhal bridge area. The tip-off suggested about the presence of Habib alias Abu Salman and his deputy Khursheed Ahmad, son of Abdul Rashid of Kwat, Chhatroo, in the hideout, the sources added. When the troops made an announcement, asking them to surrender, they opened indiscriminate fire, which was returned, DSP (hqrs), Kishtwar, Abrar Choudhary said. In the exchange of fire that ensued, Khursheed was killed while Habib managed to make good his escape unhurt. A .303 rifle along with 10 rounds and two magazines were recovered from him. A massive hunt was on to track down Habib who was wanted in several civilian killings and other militant acts. The DSP said Habib, Khursheed and their two accomplices were involved in the killing of Congress worker Abdul Ghani, son of Abdul Aziz Rather, at Kwat, Chhatroo, on May 15 night this year. |
