KU authorities busy in decoration; Students allege mismanagement | On NAAC team’s visit | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 17 (KNS): Ahead of National Assessment and Accreditation Council team’s visit to Kashmir University from July 18-22, signboards of academic achievements are being decorated in the corridors of various departments in the Varsity.
Even after much disturbing painting session, the corridors of various departments are being decorated with signposts highlighting the “academic and professional achievements.”
“After painting the buildings which disturbed class work for weeks, authorities are now busy pinning signboards in the corridors to impress the NAAC team,” official sources told KNS.
“Instead of addressing problems of students, University authorities are busy in other unimportant issues. They want to hide their failures under such magic shows,” they added.
A source in administration block told KNS that dozens of students who visit daily to obtain migration and other certificates are being asked to come after NAAC team’s visit is over.
The students are being asked to approach different offices without proper direction. “I’m coming here for the last one month to obtain certificates, but without any success. If I won’t get it (certificates) in time, I’ll miss the deadline outside state where I’ve applied for a job. But it seems University authorities are more concerned about paint and decoration than solving problems of students,” said a student Khurshid Ahmad.
Sources told KNS that higher authorities in the University want to hide its failures and as such have asked for a massive facelift ahead of the NAAC team’s visit. “Hundreds of backdoor appointments, undue promotions, purchases without tenders, double salary to some officials, financial irregularities were some of the achievements of the KU during Prof Reyaz Punjabi’s tenure from 2008 to 2011 as vice chancellor. To hide it, Punjabi’s trusted lieutenants in KU are making every effort to hoodwink the NAAC team,” they alleged.
“Even the present VC, Prof Talat Ahmad who took over in June this year is being misled by those officials who are involved in scams and embezzlements during Punjabi’s time,” they added.
The PRO KU, Showkat Shafi defended the exercise of decorating the Varsity ahead of NAAC team’s visit.
“To make achievements of the KU visible for NAAC team, signboards are important. Once they see something then only they can assess. It is a sort of requirement,” he told KNS.
