Despite warnings, Sumbal pedestrians use unsafe bridge | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Sumbal (Bandipora), July 17: Despite a signboard of precaution to negate any untoward incident, people still cross the ‘anytime-collapsing’ old Sumbal-Nesbal bridge which has been long termed dangerous for the pedestrians. An R&B official said that there was no safety for pedestrians and the bridge could collapse anytime. “There was hardly any change in the minds of the people even after a signboard of precaution was put on either sides of the bridge. People seem to be ignorant. They cross the bridge without following the orders,” he said. The new Sumbal Bridge is at half a kilometer distance from the old. However, locals said that there was no other alternative than old bridge. “From the very beginning I have been crossing this old bridge. As there is no other alternative to cross to the other side, we use it fearfully,” said a shopkeeper Mohammad Amin Shah. “The new bridge is far away from our locality. It is difficult for us to approach that bridge,” he said. Amin said that old Sumbal Nesbal-bridge was almost a century old and was banned for public use thirty years back.
