Know Your Army Campaign evokes massive response in Ladakh

Jammu, July 17:- As part of the ‘Know Your Army’ campaign in Ladakh and Kargil regions an ‘Army Mela’ was organised in the historic city of Leh on 16th and 17th Jul 2011 with the aim of strengthening the bond between people of Ladakh and the Army . The campaign started on 05 July 11 viz. ‘ The World Environment Day’ with cleanliness, tree plantation and anti-pollution drives, cycle expeditions across Eastern to Western Ladakh with messages of environmental protection, medical camps at Nimu, Karu, Kargil and Partapur, recruitment rellies and ex-serviceman rallies leading to the Kargil Divas celebration at Drass. The month long activities were conducted in close association with the Civil Government and Non-Government Organisations covering the entire regions of Ladakh. The Mela is unique in many ways as it is for the first time that the Army not only exhibited its military prowess but also reaffirmed its commitment towards protection of the fragile ecology of the Ladakh regions.
The exhibition displayed the strong bonding between the Army, Government and NGOs who together displayed a variety of stalls including Resettlement of ex-servicemen, Recruiting Directorate, Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, Army Welfare Housing Organisation, Army Welfare Education, Army Placement Agency, National Cadet Corps, Sainik Welfare, Sadbhavana, Border Roads, Ministries of Forests and Tourism, banking, philately, and handicraft stalls. Besides this, a first of its kind, an impressive military equipment display in Ladakh, was organised for the information of the locals, showcasing Advance Light Helicopter and Cheetah Helicopters, BMPs, Bofors Gun, Missiles, Radars and special clothing and equipment used for Siachen operations. Enemy weapons captured in the Kargil operations were also on display.
The environmental stalls were grouped under the head of Paryavaran Mela displaying a number stalls of Government and NGOs like Women’s Alliance, WWF, DIHAR, SLC, LNP, Pragya, LEHO, LREDA, PAGIR, WPI, etc. The future generations were represented by Army School, KV, Mahabodhi School, Secmol, Langdon, DPS, Moravian Mission, Druk Padma whose students enthusiastically participated in all competitions and carried the vow to keep Ladakh ‘Green and Clean’. The Prestigious prize of ‘Environmental Hero’ (Urban) was awarded to Mrs Tsering Kunzes , President Women Alliance , for her efforts in banning use of polythene bags in Leh city and spreading awareness on environmental issues. Environmental Hero (Rural) was presented to Mr Chhewang Norphel, Project Coordinator Leh Nutrition Project for his pioneering work on creating artificial glaciers to ensure availability of water for agricultural usage especially during the critical period of April to June.

The people of Ladhak witnessed remarkable display of the Army’s Dare-Devils Motor Cycle team, Kalari-Payattu (South Indian Martial Art), Mass Khukhri Drill, Mass Bhangra Display, Mass Band Display and ending with the solemn ‘Beating the Retreat’.
Mr Rigzin spalbar, CEC LAHDC, Leh and Mr Ahmad Ali Khan Kacho CEC Kargil were the guests of honour. Mrs Tsetan Dolkar, wife of the Tourism Minister of J&K Mr Nawang was also present with other esteemed guests that included ,Mr Tsering Angchuk, DC Leh, Mr R Chauhan Secretary KVIC, Maj Gen (retd) VK Dhal & MD Indus Ind Bank. Lt Gen Ravi Dastane, VSM Corps commander Fire & Fury Corps was the chief host. Maj Gen K Mazumdar, ADG, Ceremonial Welfare from Army HQ also attended the function.
