Sham seeks society’s intervention for population control | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, JULY 17-To give further impetus to the development of health infrastructure, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mr Sham Lal Sharma today laid foundation stone of additional block in the Sub District Hospital, Bishnah. The new building to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.12 crore and would serve the requirements of indoor patients. This was a long pending demand of the area as the hospitals caters to the healthcare needs of thousands of people from adjoining localities as well as Bishnah town. Later, addressing the health workers at a one-day seminar organized by the District Health Society (NRHM), Jammu in the town as a part of world population fortnight, the Minister said that coalition government was committed to ensure better health care facilities for the people, especially in the rural areas. He said government was working to upgrade the health infrastructure under a well-knit programme and massive development has taken place during the past couple of years. He said Bishnah and R S Pura hospitals will be fully equipped and people of these areas will get all kinds of facilities at their doorsteps. He said, both these areas have huge catchment area and facilities will be upgraded according to the workload, so that the people may not have to travel to Jammu for getting health facilities, the Minister maintained. Seeking support from all walks of life for checking population growth, the Minister said that it is a matter of concern and coordinated efforts are required at different levels to tackle with this issue. The constant growth of population is causing hurdle in the development process and need of the hour is to create greater awareness in the society to promote the small family norms. He maintained that ASHAs and other grass-root level workers with the help of Sarpanches and Panches can play their important role in checking the menace of population explosion. The Minister also expressed for serious efforts by the take minded people and social organizations in maintaining the sex ratio and saving the girl child from foeticide. He said recent census report is an eye opener and “we all have to make collective efforts to maintain the sex ratio”, said Mr Sharma. Cautioning those indulging in the practice of sex determination and illegal abortions to kill the girl child, the Minister said government will deal with such elements with heavy hands. He said ample time has been given to the owners of such unlawful clinics to desist from the illegal activities and now they have no excuse and will face action. He directed the concerned officers to continue their drive against the illegal private institutions/clinics to strictly enforce the PNDT Act in the state. MLA Bishnah, Mr Ashwani Sharma thanked the Minister for improving the health facilities in the area. He lauded the performance of the health employees in Bishnah hospital. He stressed the need for awareness to central population. Director Health, Dr Ashok Sharma, Mission Director, NRHM, Dr Yash pal Sharma, Director Floriculture, Mr K K Sharma, Director Horticulture, Mr J L Sharma, Controller, Drugs and Food Control Organization, Mr Satish Gupta, large number of health workers including ASHAs, doctors, prominent citizens, sarpanches and panches of the area were also present on the occasion.
