Sarpanchs, panchs in JK to be administered oath in phases

SRINAGAR, JULY 18- Maintaining that the elected representatives of the Panchayati Raj System would be empowered effectively very soon, the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj . Ali Mohammad Sagar said that the endeavour of the government to decentralize power to the gross root level has been given a practical s The Minister was addressing a press conference convened here today. Commissioner Secretary Rural Development . Yedullah, Director Information Kh. Farooq Renzushah, Director Rural Development . Jehangir Mir and other senior officers of Rural Development were present.
Replying to the queries, the Minister said that the massive participation of the people in these elections stands testimony to the fact that they have reposed their faith in good governance and democratic setup. He further added that elections have been conducted in a fair and transparent manner and it is for the first time that 80 percent participation has been registered.
Giving details of the Panchayati Raj elected representatives, . Sagar said that 29,707 Panchs and 4128 Sarpanchs have been elected and their term will start from 15th July and oath swearing would be done on 19th July. He said that from 26th July to 2nd August first meeting would be called and powers would be devolved to the elected representatives. “Notification has already been issued for holding elections to the block development councils” he further added. Referring to the empowerment of the Panchayati Raj representatives, the Minister said they can exercise their powers within every department to ensure that the people of the rural areas do not face any inconvenience viz a viz the basic amenities like Electricity, Water, Irrigation etc and the problems get solved at the gross root level.
