| ‘Alleged theft of telephone wire’ | | 1200 telephones lying defunct in Reshamghar area | |
JAMMU | NOV 27 A record number of 1200 land- line phones have been rendered defunct following reported theft of the wire as a result of which the customers have been deprived of the facility for which they have been regularly paying for to the BSNL. The customers of Mahesh Pora and Resham Ghar colonies in the city have been noticing some technical snags in the landline telephonic services for the last one- year with nobody coming to their rescue. Despite having lodged their complaints with the concerned authorities nothing has been done so far to restore their telephones. The affected customers say that if this is the case with the city customers what would be the fate of those living in remote and far- flung areas of the state. This speaks volumes about the functioning of the department, which is directly under the control of the Central Government, they said. The Government of India has declared the locality as heart of Jammu city by a recent survey conducted and is located in the close proximity of Government Medical College Jammu (GMC). In this colony all the phone numbers which start with 254 digits numbering about 1200 are non functional for the last 27 days. While speaking to Early Times the inhabitants of the colony alleged that some unscrupulous elements have stolen the main wire in the locality for the third time in connivance with the police and officials of the concerned department. “This has been for the third time that the wire has been stolen and the concerned SDOP II is reported to have admitted the theft of wire saying that FIR has been lodged in this regard”, said Arsh Sehbai, a senior resident of the colony. He further added that since he is not accustomed of Cell phones, his daily schedule suffers due to non-functioning of his land- line phone. “We are not supposed to give rent of non functional showcased phones which in turn cause heavy loss to us” he added. Vijay Uppal another resident of the area said that despite many complaints to the Telecom authorities, nothing seems to have been done in this regard so far. They keep on escaping their job by pointing towards each other. “Whenever we approached SDOP II Sarwal he asked us to go to CTO Bakshi Nagar who in turn directed us to go Rani Talab but regrettably no body bothered to see the problem barring shifting responsibility from one section to another, and added that for the last one month they have been straying from pillar to post but the BSNL which claims in media to be the number one in telecom sector has number one irresponsible employees in the city. Likewise one more Dharam Pal said that there is no one to take action against these irresponsible employees in the department. “We have been paying rent every month for the paralyzed services for more than one year” he said and added that the theft is only because of negligence of the BSNL authorities as the main wire was not down to the earth since BSNL had escaped the cost of labour in that case.Residents of the area also added that DPs are also not placed at appropriate place, resulting into wastage of telephone wires and leaving them open to any damage.Early Times when spotlighted the matter to General Manager BSNL, RK Koul he said that until now he was not aware of any such complaint but if there is fault on the part of functioning of departmental offices, the accused would be pulled up. Meanwhile when SHO Bakshi Nagar was contacted over the phone he denied any such report of telephone wire theft in the area.
