Congress rank and file yearning for 'change of guard' by 2012 | Rotational CM | | Early Times Report jammu, July 18: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram might have reassured Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that there would no change of guard in January 2012. Congress general secretary and Sonia Gandhi's son, Rahul Gandhi, who maintains cordial relations with Omar Abdullah, might be for the status quo. Omar Abdullah might have entertained the belief that he would rule the state for a full term of six years. But these assurances and the Chief Minister's belief do not reflect the mood of the majority of the Jammu-based Congress leaders and workers. The mood here in Jammu is totally different. During the last few days, this scribe met scores of Congress leaders and Congress workers to know their opinion on the issue of rotational Chief Minister. Believe it or not, but it is a fact that an overwhelming majority of those who this interviewed expressed their disgust over the stand taken by the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Congress high command. Only a couple of Congress leaders said, "they are committed soldiers of the Congress and they would abide by the high command's decision whatever it would be." At the same time, however, they did really reject the 2002 power-sharing formula: three years for PDP and three years for Congress. They did say "it would help the Congress in Jammu region in case the party rules the state after the NC completes three years in office." They even told that "they would like JKPCC president Saif-ud-Din Soz to take over as Chief Minister." The remaining Congress leaders not only criticized Manmohan Singh, Chidambaram and Rahul Gandhi but they also revealed that the "issue of rotational Chief Minister is very much alive" and that "they are trying their level best to persuade those who matter in the Congress to replace Omar Abdullah with some Congressman." They emphasized the need for rotational Chief Minister and desired any deserving Congress leader to become the State Chief Minister on January 5, 2012." Omar Abdullah would complete three years in office on January 4, 2012. The argument advanced by those who want Congress Chief Minister was that the "continuation of Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister for full term would jeopardize the interests of the Congress in Jammu province where it has already become quite unpopular because of the non-performance of the Jammu-based Congress ministers, total disconnect between the ministers and the Congress workers and the policies being pursued by the NC-led government." What was more significant was their vehement opposition for those who "mishandled the Dogra certificate issue" and those who are "working for the rehabilitation of militants in the state." If one goes by the mood of the Jammu Congress leadership and workers, then one can say that the coming days would witness the Congress leaders raising the pitch and seeking change of guard. This scribe was given to understand by "at least three Delhi-based senior Congress leaders -- all hailing from the state -- are lobbying for ensuring the change of guard in January 2012." |
