Employees protest rally foiled | Dozens detained, several injured in police action | |
Early Times Report
srinagar, July 18: Police on Monday used force to disperse employees protest rally here. The employees were demanding release of pending arrears of the sixth pay commission, regularization of dailywagers, enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 and enhancement in wages of Anganwari workers. On the call of Joint Consultative Committee thousands of employees gathered at Exhibition crossing in the heart of the city and started marching towards the nearby Civil Secretariat this afternoon. Reports said as soon the protesting employees tried to move towards the Civil Secretariat, police swung into action and used force to disperse the rally. More than hundred employees, including their leaders, were detained and nearly a dozen others injured in the police action. Some of the seriously injured employees were shifted to SK Institute of Medical Sciences Soura. The JCC had announced "Secretariat Gherao" and threatened to intensify the agitation if the demands of the employees were not met immediately. The JCC leader and Employees Joint Action Committee (K) chairman, Khurshid Alam blamed some bureaucrats and Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather and another senior cabinet minister for backtracking from the agreement made with the employees last year. "Government shouldn't take five lakh employees far granted. It can be disastrous for the government," he warned. "The state government is forcing the employees to pour on the roads. It has practically failed to implement the promises and assurances given to us time and again during the past three years," he told KNS. Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohi-ud-Din said that state government wasn't in a position to fulfill the demands of employees at the moment. " I appeal to the employees on behalf of the government to avoid confrontation. We have sent the proposal to the central government and we are waiting for it. We can't give false hope to the employees and unless central government doesn't support the state, we won't be able to pay the arrears," Taj told KNS. Asked why police used force against the employees, he said, "Law has to take its own course of action. When someone resorts to violence, police has to take cognizance. We can't allow anybody to disrupt peace in Kashmir as tourist season is at its peak," he added. Meanwhile, work in most of the government offices was badly hit due to today's protest programme. |
