J&K Bank sign MoU with govt for UID implementation
7/19/2011 10:44:29 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, July 19: J&K Bank and the J&K government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) here today for implementation of the Unique Identification Project in the state.
Notably, J&K Bank has been appointed Registrar for the project.
J&K Bank president, G. M. Sahibzada on behalf of the bank and Commissioner/ Secretary, IT department, Manoj Kumar Diwedi, on behalf of the J&K government, signed the MoU in presence of Minister for IT, Govt. of J&K, Agha Syed Ruhullah, J&K Bank vice president, F. M. Gani, UID Project Incharge, Khursheed Pandit and other seniors officers of the state and the bank were also present on the occasion.
The State Government had earlier on 14th July 2010 entered into MoU with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), agency of the Government of India responsible for implementing the envisioned Unique Identification card (UID Card) project in India.
Under the project, UIDAI will be issuing Adhaar, a 12-digit unique number to all the residents of India. The number will be stored in a centralized database and linked to the basic demographics and biometric information – photograph, ten finger prints and iris – of each individual.
J&K Bank, as Registrar of the project in the state of J&K, through various enrollment agencies, shall be responsible for enrolment of the state subjects and collection of bio-metric data as prescribed by the UIDAI.
The most important characteristic of Aadhaar is its universality and it is likely that the biometric card with the number will be gradually accepted across the country as the identification number by all service providers and government agencies.
The number will also hopefully reduce the hassle of repeatedly proving identity by various documents to avail services like opening a bank account and obtaining passport or driving licence and so on.
For the people living below the poverty line and the ones who are entitled to various government-run welfare programmes, the number and the biometric data will help in identifying the beneficiaries.
