Poppy straw smuggling increasing, police sleeping | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 19: Though the poppy straw smuggling cases have increased in recent past, but police has failed to totally rein in on its arrival in the state. Sources said that with some officials turning blind eye towards the entire illegal trade, the raw material used in manufacturing various forms of narcotics is easily reaching the youth who are mostly poor or from weaker social structure. It is pertinent to mention here that many cases have been registered in the different concerned police stations related to the illicit drugs but ‘carriers’ are able to jump the law. The accused do not get appropriate punishment for the illegal work they do. Recently, on July 13, 2001 two narcotic smugglers were arrested and 162 kg of poppy was recovered from possession them. In another case a truck driver was arrested along with 35 kg of poppy worth of Rs four lakh in the international market on May 5. “It is only tip of the ice berg and tones of poppy straw is finding its way in the state every year”, said a source. Official’s sources disclosed that some department officials at times allow people dealing with the trade of banned substance to jump the nakas in lure for huge amount of money. He further said that the high level officials help to passed the Nakka’s of Police and he also said which people are arrested are just small fishes but high level and influential people remain away from the police net. A official source maintained that the truck drivers and other people carry together huge quantity of “charas” and the sell the Jammu and Kashmir innocent people. It creates effect on the today youths. When the contacted SSP Jammu, Anand Jain said that the department officials have launched a special drive against the people and steps are being taken to deal with the menace. He further said that they people don’t know about the result of these activities and he said that the department also trying to trace the all accused that support the illegal work. He appealed to the youth save our and friends life and give guide to make a difference seeking the drug. It is pertinent to mention here that years of turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir has seen an alarming increase in the number of youth taking to drugs. More than three lakh youth in the state are addicted to various types of drugs.
