Thrashed, arrested and humiliated, govt treats its employees as outlaws | | | Early Times Report jammu, July 19: The brute handling of the state government employees' protest in summer capital Srinagar has raised some basic questions which must be answered by those ordering such handling of the highly sensitive situation. More than two dozen protesting employees were injured when police thrashed them at Jehangir Chowk in Srinagar and scores were arrested as they were peacefully marching towards the civil secretariat to attract the attention of the government towards their genuine demands. The employees among other things were demanding release of arrears in their favour as per the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission, enhancement of retirement age from the present 58 to 60 years, regularization of daily wagers and better wages for the Anganwari workers. Ironically, all these demands of the state government employees have already been accepted in principal by the state government except the enhancement in the retirement age which according to the state government needs further discussion and understanding because of its wider implications on the unemployment scenario in the state. What needed to be done by any responsible government instead of ordering the police to use batons, water cannons and wholesale arrest of the employees was to immediately call the employees for a dialogue and promise them a firm date when the government would be able to implement its word. Could such a brutal handling of the peaceful employees have been ordered in any other state than J&K? Would not the Congress general secretary, Rahul Gandhi airdash to Lucknow had such a development taken place in Uttar Pradesh? This question needs answers from both the state chief minister, Omar Abdullah and the senior Congress leaders who are claiming to be following the coalition Dharma by supporting each and every action taken by the state government, be it the thrashing, the humiliation and the insulting of the state government employees the other day. |
