Resentment grows over 'unfair' distribution of new colleges
Cong seeks intervention of Coordination committee

Early Times Report
jammu, July 19: With resentment growing up in rank and file of Congress over what is being seen as 'unfair' distribution of recently announced colleges by the NC led government across the state, some leaders are now seeking the role of Coordination Commitee to intervene and sort out the matter in accordance with 'merit and deserving' norms. Congress by and large feels 22 collges to be opened under state and central government schemes have been granted on purely political considerations instead of considering the educationally backward criteria, a basic norm which has been sought by the Centre and UGC for opening these colleges.
According to sources, it has been well laid out at least under the Central scheme that a college will be granted to that area which among other things has been identified as educationally backward area. However, this norm while selecting most of the places has been brazenly thrown to winds and some areas have been chosen where the colleges already exist or have more than one in its proximity, sources said. This has infuriated many ruling politicians as well as those in opposition who allege their areas despite fullfilling all the 'eligibility' norms have been deliberately ignored and preference have been given on political considerations.
The row is getting louder in Jammu where Congress is openly crying foul and blaming NC, particularly Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for ignoring the interests of Congress in granting collges in the areas which genuinely deserved so. After Doda MLA and former minister Abdul Majid Wani raised this matter openly and expressed grouse, it is the youth Congress leader RS Pathania who is now calling shots and up in arms, alleging government has adopted a prejudiced and discrminative approach in selecting locations for setting up 22 new Degree colleges in the state.
Congress leaders feel that selection of the places shows it has been done not only to please blue eyed politicians, but the main issue remains that deserving areas have been neglected once again as a result of which people of these areas have been deprived of their right. The Congress leaders who are raising this cry feel it has happened as NC did not take Congree into confidence before finalising the list of places for creation of new colleges. WHile Wani has written a letter to CM, Pathania besides approaching Omar and asking him to review the list and issue it afresh, has also conveyed it to central leadership for their intervention in the matter. Patahania along with other local politicians of Udhampur have set up a joint platform, strongly seeking a college for Majalta which they feel is most deserving given its backwardness criteria and the hardships being faced by students as the area lacks one for over a stretch of 150 kms.
"I strongly feel the coordination committee should take up this matter and sort it out of course in accordance with set guidelines .......merit should not be sacrificed at all, whether the area is a political constituency of NC or Congress or any other MLA.........", said Pathania. Congress must assert as this is a matter of education to those who have been deprived, he said adding that colleges and universities are the academic institutions over which no compromises can be made. Congress, he said , is an ally of NC in ruling coalition and it should have been taken into confidence.
