“NC patronizing defeated party workers”: Mehbooba | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar,July 20: Peoples Democratic Party has convened a state level Panchayat conference here on 28th of July 2011. Announcing this here today the party president Mehbooba Mufti said all the Panchayat members elected recently and having affiliation with PDP would be attending the day long conference. Panchayat members from Kashmir and Jammu regions would be attending. Mehbooba said that the conference, first of its kind ever to be held in the state would discuss the political and governance scenarios of the state. It would also focus on the important issues of the empowerment of panchayats. Resolution on all these issues would be discussed in the conference. The PDP president said the issue of the empowerment of panchayats has assumed urgency in view of the failure of the state government to even formally set up these institutions. Formal notifications of the elected members of panchayats is still to be issued even as some of them were elected three months back. She said the NC led government is trying to subvert the system from the beginning it\self. Instead of trying to institutionalize the panchayats the NC is trying to pressure or lure the panches and sarpanches to join the party that has been routed at the ground level. She said even though the NC supported candidates lost most of the seats the defeated candidates were being patronised rather than help establish a genuine panchayat Raaj through elected members of these institutions. It was highly regrettable that this trend had been initiated in Ganderbal constituency which is represented by the Chief Minister and is now being extended to other areas, she added and said that the NC was using the administrative favors to their defeated candidates and ordering works on their recommendation rather than going by the resolution of the panchayat.
