| Infiltration down in Kashmir, BSF phase out by March | | | NEW DELHI, NOV 28 Infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir has come down this year even though the number of violent incidents in the state have increased, BSF said today.
"The situation in the Western front is much better now... In Kashmir, there is a fall in infiltration, but there has been a slight increase in the number of violent incidents," BSF Director General A K Mitra told reporters here.
He said the replacement of BSF troops with CRPF personnel in the Kashmir valley was "more or less complete" and the phasing out process in the rest of the state is likely to be completed by March, 2007.
"Earlier CRPF said they will take over by January, but now they are saying the process will be completed by March. It is getting staggered," he said addressing the annual press conference ahead of BSF's 41st Raising Day on December one.
After the disengagement process is compeleted, the BSF will remain only at the LoC, parts of Baramulla and Jammu, he added.
He said the idea behind the pull out was to move more BSF personnel to the eastern border, which he said was going to be the "problem area" in the coming days in view of large-scale infiltration.
Asked whether the border force has turned into a counter- insurgency force, Mitra said "that is a cross we will have to bear. We are being moved from one border to a much-worser border."
