Fresh batches of 10000 pilgrims left for holy Amarnath | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 20: More than 10,000 pilgrims today left from Baltal and Pahalgam base camps for holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir, where more than 4.70 lakh had already paid obeisance at the holy cave shrine since the commencement of the pilgrimage on June 29. The yatra was progressing smoothly despite cloudy weather on both tracks. Yatra officials said about 5000 pilgrims, including women, sadhus and children, today left Baltal and Nunwan Pahalagam base camp for the cave shrine. This was the lowest number of pilgrims, who left the base camps for holy Cave since June 29 as at an average of about 25000 yatris had visited the shrine daily. Meanwhile, in the wake of pilgrims continuously losing their lives on the arduous tracks en-route the Holy Cave, Additional Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) Preet Pal Singh has once again appealed to all the intending pilgrims to embark upon the yatra only after having their physical fitness checked from a doctor. ''No person who has any serious medical or orthopaedic ailment, or any breathing, chest or heart problem should plan to undertake this arduous Yatra, which involves climbing up to nearly 14,000 feet'', he added. Trekking in the high altitude route to the holy cave is quite difficult and, besides, inclement weather also poses challenges for the pilgrims. Doctors and paramedical staff along the two routes, via Pahalgam and Baltal, have been deployed for providing emergency medicare and treatment to the pilgrims. The Additional CEO also urged the intending pilgrims to strictly adhere to the Do's and Don'ts issued by the Shrine Board for the yatris visiting the cave, which are also printed on the reverse of the yatra permit and, besides, available on the Board's website, as they have to undertake a very arduous trek through high mountains under adverse weather conditions. Singh said as per the Meteorological department's weather forecast for today to July 24, it would be partly cloudy from today to July 22 and there is a possibility of light rain or thundershowers during July 23 and July 24, in the Kashmir division. Singh has advised all those who intend to visit the holy cave, located at 13,500 feet, to ascertain the obtaining weather conditions for the yatra area before embarking on the pilgrimage. The details of weather forecast are available on the website of the Indian Meteorological Department, at (www.amssdelhi.gov.in).
