Public good should be ultimate goal of panchayats: Omar | ‘Transfer of powers to them my Government’s commitment’ | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday said that the committee headed by the Chief Secretary to formulate road map and identify the quantum of powers to be transferred to panchayats has submitted its report and Government would discuss it in the cabinet for approval. “My Government is committed to the transfer of powers to panchayats to the degree possible”, he said adding that powerful grass-root democratic institutions are crucial to catapult developmental scenario and help launch of schemes as per public aspirations. Omar said that in a state like Jammu and Kashmir Government cannot be run from the Secretariat level. He said devolution of power to the public representatives at lower level is imperative in ensuring equitable and holistic development of all areas. He said panchayats are basic units in a democratic set up which are necessary part of plan formulation and implementation of works. As a part of his continuous interactions with newly elected panchayat members at constituency wise, the Chief Minister today addressed panches and sarpanches of Pulwama and Pampore Assembly segments after inaugurating 4-day training camps there. Chief Minister said that the political opponents of his Government tried their best to mislead people on the intention of Government to hold panchayat elections in the State. “They spread different rumours about holding of elections, participation of candidates, voter turnover etc. But we were sincere and determined to hold the elections. We succeeded with your support and proved all speculations in this regard totally incorrect. We are committed to empower you so that you deliver properly and purposefully”, he added. Chief Minister congratulated the people in general and elected members in particular for taking part in the elections overwhelmingly braving all difficulties and defeating conspiracies hatched by certain elements. The Chief Minister cautioned the newly elected panchayat members of the tactics of unscrupulous elements and said that they would try to test your honesty and dignity through different means. “You have to prove your metal and foil all designs aimed at influencing you through different means”, he said reminding the panchayat members of their responsibility towards public good. The meetings were also addressed by Minister of Rural development Ali Mohammad Sagar, Minister of State for Rural Development, Ajaz Ahmad Khan while Parliament Member Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri was present on the occasion.
