7/21/2011 1:04:40 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 20 :Farmers in Jammu and Kashmir were being advised to emulate farming community in Punjab, Haryana and other states where pumps for irrigating crops are being run on solar energy.

The farmers in the state were informed about the benefits of the scheme as the centre was providing 95 per cent subsidy on use of solar energy for making irrigation pumps functional.

After the successful installation solar power and solar heating projects at Mata Vaishnov Devi Shrine and at the two Raj Bhawans in Jammu and Kashmir the Government has been assured of full financial and technical assistance in setting up solar power and solar heating plants in all major hospitals in the state. Under the second phase solar energy plants were to be installed at primary health centres and small hospitals in the rural areas. Reports said that in various border areas, Army too was providing help to the people in setting up solar energy plants.

The state Government has been told by the centre that it should focus its attention on setting solar power and solar heating plants so that it was spared of spending a major portion of the annual plan on the purchase of power. Apart from this peoples' growing anger against the government's failure in providing uninterrupted power supply could be checked once solar power plants were set up at sub-tehsil levels besides at the district headquarters.

Various NGOs have been asked to provide necessary help to people so that small solar power and heating plants were installed in their houses. Government functionaries said that besides providing round the clock lighting and illumination facilities in and around the Bhawan the solar heating projects would help to heat 5,000 litres of water at the Bhawan and 2,000 litres of water in Raj Bhawan.

Reports said that the New and Renewable Energy ministry, headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah, has focused its interest in setting series of solar power and heating plant s in Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh. After the two districts were covered under the scheme other areas including Zanskar and the border areas kissing the LAC in China were to be provided with solar energy plants.
