Water scarcity worries paddy growers of R.S Pura | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 21: Due to the apathetic attitude of the irrigation department, farming community is facing lot of problem ahead of rice sowing season particularly in R.S Pura sector, the Basmati bowl of Jammu and Kashmir. The reason is that department has failed to clean up the canals on time leading to water crisis in many parts of Jammu region. Though crores have been spent on the modernization of the canals, rivers and other water resources to help the cultivators, but nothing has helped the farmers. Farmers maintain that 70 percent people of the state are totally dependent on the agriculture. They maintain that canals are their lifeline since they cater to the irrigation needs of the large number of farmers in the Jammu region. They also said that in some parts of R.S.Pura, water has been released into the canals without cleaning them. Every farmer of the said area is deprived of minimum water require for the sowing of rice and transplantation of rice feeding. Fertilizers also other facilities or required things like pesticides, insecticide are also not provided by the authorities to the farmers. Almost all the varieties of the rice are ground in R.S Pura area especially the basmati rice of the region are famous and are exported from the country but this negligence of authority toward this rice producing area is becoming threat to this rice bowl of Jammu. Hari Dass one of the farmer of the R.S Pura area said that they are facing shortage of water supply.
Bishan Dass also farmer of this area said because of water shortage the paddy plants planted have turned yellow due to scarcity of water. He further also said that the sudden increase, rise in the price of fertilizers also disturb their budgets and effects their crops as they unable to bear the burden of increased prices.
