NSUI needs to hold aloof from sensitive issues | Central University | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 21: The J&K student wing of the Congress party, National Students Union of India (NSUI), has broken its silence after a very long time. It didn't break its silence in order to make common cause with the student organizations, especially the student wing of the Panthers Party, which have been agitating for the last more than 19 days in order to force the authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir to establish in Jammu the sanctioned Central University (CU). It broke its silence to virtually identify itself with Kashmiri separatists who have unleashed a no-holds-barred vilification campaign against certain state governments to create an impression that these state governments have been harassing "students of Jammu and Kashmir studying in the various states of the country." It bears recalling that only yesterday the NSUI issued a very lengthy statement indicting several statements and several organizations, including RSS, VHP, Shiv Sena, BJP and so on, for what it called their vindictive attitude. What the NSUI said was what almost all the militant organizations in Kashmir, besides a couple of the so-called mainstream organizations in the Valley, have been saying since long to paint certain organizations and certain non-Congress-ruled states black and oppressive and arouse popular feeling in the Valley for ulterior purposes. By speaking the language the Kashmir-based organizations speak, the NSUI has practically established that its attitude is no different and that it could also go to any extent to vitiate the atmosphere in the state. The NSUI says that certain state governments have been harassing students from Jammu and Kashmir. This is a malicious charge. Students from Jammu province who have been studying in different parts of the country have no such complaint. Similarly, students from Ladakh studying in different educational institutions in different parts of the country have no such complaint. It is only some Kashmiri students with "doubtful credentials" who are sometime questioned by the security agencies for the activities they allegedly indulge in and it is the duty of the security agencies to verify the credentials of the doubtful. The situation in the country is such that has forced the authorities to sometime question certain elements on the basis their inputs, but to say that the students from Jammu and Kashmir are the only ones who are being harassed is only to exaggerate things and arouse anti-feelings among the followers of one particular religion. The Kashmiri leadership is responsible for the troubles, if any, certain students from Kashmir face outside the Valley. The people in general and the student community in Jammu in particular would have appreciated the NSUI leadership, had it approached the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre and urged it to establish the CU in Jammu and appoint a local academician as its first Vice-Chancellor. That it didn't do so and, instead, sought to communalize the situation in Kashmir by raking up a non-issue should raise several issues and establish that its intentions are not really noble. But what it has said should not surprise anyone. After all, it is the student wing of a party that has consistently blundered in Jammu and Kashmir and created a very serious problem for India, particularly in the Kashmir Valley. The NSUI, which is virtually non-existent and dysfunctional, needs to revise its whole approach to the educational problems being faced not only by the students of Jammu and Ladakh provinces but also of Kashmir Valley and the best course for it would be to identify itself with the genuine student cause and hold itself aloof from issues which have the potential of further communalizing the situation in the state.
