Sheikh Nazir Ko Gusa Kab Atta Hai?

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 21: Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, the ruling National Conference (NC) general secretary and the cousin of party patron, Dr. Farooq Abdullah literally lost his cool while interacting with party legislators, senior workers and middle rung leaders recently in Srinagar.
Sheikh Nazir has been known for his proximity to both Dr. Abdullah and his late father, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. The reins of party had been handed over to him by the Abdullah family for good reasons. He would maintain a close control on the party and also keep it politically active and kicking.
Unfortunately, two things have taken a serious beating during the last few years. Sheikh Nazir's health and the health of the NC as a vibrant political party. Both the party general secretary and the party have been passing through trying times. The fact has been realized by Sheikh Nazir and despite his feeble health, the party general secretary called a crucial meeting to discuss the party's activation at the grassroots level in Srinagar a few days back. The meeting was called at Nawa-e-Subha party headquarters.
To his utter shock, the once over-arching and all powerful general secretary realized that his directive to party leaders to be present at the party headquarters at the scheduled time had fallen on deaf ears.
Shamima Firdous, the NC legislator was a glaring example. Not only did she come late by one and a half hours to attend the party meeting, but she almost reacted with anger to Sheikh Nazir's disgust at her more than casual approach towards such a crucial party meeting.
It was both anger and grief that showed on Sheikh Nazir's face when he noticed the rebellious approach of somebody he would not even remotely be worried about till a few years back. The party had fallen into bad hands. Such a reaction would neither have been expected nor possible a few years back. The NC is gradually slipping out of the hands of its leaders.
Nobody must have seen the writing on the wall more vividly than Sheikh Nazir himself. Gone are the days when the NC leaders and workers would assemble at the Mujahid Manzil headquarters of the party as devotees assemble at some shrine. Party workers would wait for endless hours to get a glimpse of the party founder, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah who would sometimes choose to give 'Darshans to his party men' at Mujahid Manzil headquarters.
Today the situation has been reversed. The party general secretary had to wait for a long time before some of his senior party leaders decided to give him their "Darshan".
Reliable sources told Early Times, Sheikh Nazir has conveyed his feelings about the serious deterioration, indiscipline and lack of command and control structure in the party to his cousin Dr. Farooq Abdullah. Source also said Sheikh Nazir has asked Dr. Abdullah to take up the issue with the chief minister, Omar Abdullah as well.
"After all, it has to be Omar Sahib who must tighten the command and control system in the party", sources said.
The same general secretary whose slight slant of the eyebrows would sent panic down the spine of his party workers is now looked upon by them as some sort of an archaic party relic. How serious the issues of corruption, nepotism and lack of control have become in the NC can be understood by a simple example. Recently, a senior NC leader gave a recommendatory letter to a local contractor. The letter was addressed to an engineer. When the contractor arrived at the engineer's place, another man also showed up with another letter of recommendations from the same NC leader for the same piece of work. The confused engineer finally discovered that the NC leader had taken money from both for giving a letter of recommendation.
