| Gupta cautions state, centre over growing resentment over delay in CU | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 23: The former Union Minister and member Assembly, Chaman Lal Gupta has expressed his serious concern over the inordinate delay in establishing the Central University in Jammu area and cautioned the ruling leaders, both of the State as also that of the Centre that they should take immediate note of the growing resentment over the issue especially the spread of agitation amongst the students.
Referring to the brewing resentment and demonstrations by the students indicating the trends of violence, Gupta said it is unfortunate that Jammu was never given its due without bloodshed and long struggles.
In this regard, he recalled that Kashmir University, Medical College and even the Regional Engineering College in Srinagar were established in fifties of the last century and to get the Campus and latter on a University in Jammu as also the Medical College, the people of Jammu had to struggle hard and in 60’s four students were killed in police firing in addition to several other sad incidents.
Gupta pointed out that over two years ago the Central University was originally sanctioned by the Centre for Jammu but it was intriguing that the Central University has begun to function at Srinagar for about two years now but in case of Jammu even the issue of appointment of the Vice Chancellor is being deliberately blown out of proportions but with a design to scuttle the establishment of the institution which could be of a great use for the people of this region.
He deplored that despite this sort of regional bias against Jammu the ruling leaders of both the Congress and that of National Conference still parrot that they are extending equal treatment to all the regions to ensure equal development of all the areas.
He appealed to the people of Jammu to remain at guard against the designs of the ruling junta. He condemned the lathicharge on university students by the Police.
