SKIMS conducts joint-knee replacement surgery

Srinagar, July 23 (KNS): Live joint knee replacement surgery was conducted at SKIMS today by orthopedic surgeon association of Kashmir. The surgery was conducted by a team of doctors which included Dr O N Nagi, Dr Naseer Ahmed Mir, Dr Javaid. Thie surgery, according to PRO SKIMS, Kulsoom Bhat, was done under the supervision of Chief surgeon O N Nagi (Surgeon, Department of Orthopedics, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Research Centre, New Delhi).
This is first such surgery conducted successfully at SKIMS. “The main purpose of this exercise was to provide on job training to resident doctors especially those from SKIMS Medical College Dr. Khurshid Kangu, orthopedician. The exercise is also meant to create much needed mass awareness and also educate them on the latest surgical procedures involved in such surgeries. This type of surgery is beneficial for the patients across Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.
Quoting Dr Khursheed, the PRO said, Osto-ortho is a common problem in Kashmir and about 15-20 percent of the people suffer from this disease in Kashmir. “The main reason is sitting and skating habits and cold conditions of the valley. He pointed out that knee replacement is a viable surgical procedure in treating the disease. The procedure involves joint replacement of diseased cartilage with metal. The patient recovers within a week and gets relief from the pain quickly.”
Dr. Nasir Ahmed Mir, Organizing Secretary of the event at SKIMS said that in a constant endeavor to provide a platform to share and learn about advances in the field of joint knee replacement surgeries, this program was organized. Later, Prof. O.N. Nagi, Chief Surgeon gave a detailed presentation on the subject. Director SKIMS, Dr. Showkat Zargar appreciated and congratulated the team of doctors for conducting the surgery. He said in future SKIMS will encourage more such programs to help students and resident doctors to know latest advances and techniques in the related fields.
