Life crippled due to general strike in Srinagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Jul 23 : Life has been paralysed here and other major towns and tehsil headquarters due to strike called by separatist leaders protesting against rape of a woman allegedly by two security personnel in Kulgam district. State police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel remained deployed in Srinagar city and other major towns of the valley to ensure law and order during the shutdown. Official sources said precautions have been taken to ensure that anti-social elements and miscreants are prevented from creating law and order problems. Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was also off the road. However, private vehicle and some three wheelers could be seen plying on some routes in the civil lines. Educational institutions wore a deserted look. Work in government offices, banks and public undertakings was affected. Petrol pumps and Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) ration depots were also closed.
Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and other separatist and religious organisations have called for a general strike today to protest against the rape of a 30-year-old woman, allegedly by two security force personnel in a forest at Manzgam, Kulgam, on July 19 and 20.
However, the Army has already initiated internal probe and assured all help to bring to book the guilty persons. The state has also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and filed an FIR in this connection.
A report received from Baramulla said life was paralysed in this and other major towns and tehsil headquarters in north Kashmir, as with all shops and business establishments remained closed.
The strike was so far peaceful, it said adding work in government offices, banks and educational institutions was affected due to strike.
Business and other activities remained shut in this and other major towns in the south Kashmir, a report received from Anantnag said.
Transport was also off the roads. However, vehicles, carrying Amarnath pilgrims were plying normally.
All educational institutions remained shut and work in government offices and banks was affected.
Similar reports were also received from other parts of the Kashmir valley.
