Panthers Party has become somewhat pro-active but… Dogra Certificate | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 23: The Congress leadership in Jammu seldom speaks. It doesn't speak even when the people are on the roads protesting against the anti-Jammu policies being pursued by the state government of which the Congress is a part. Perhaps, the Congress leadership in Jammu has nothing to speak. Despite the fact that party rank and file are feeling suffocated, marginalized and cheated. Congress is becoming quite unpopular in this province day by day and still the leadership thinks it prudent not to open its mouth and lodge protest against the NC. The story of BJP is no different. It, like the Congress, has no Jammu-specific agenda. It is faction- ridden. Nobody knows which leader is ith the BJP and who is not. It consistently beats about the bush and behaves in a fashion that makes the people reject the BJP as an outfit that has outlived its utility in the state. In other words, both the Congress and the BJP have virtually become irrelevant in this province. Since both these outfits have failed to come up to the expectations of the people of Jammu province and since both these outfits have failed to project the issues confronting the people of Jammu province, it is the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) that has been trying to fill the vacuum. Its senior leadership is quite busy these days in exposing the "anti-Jammu" policies and bringing to the notice of the people of Jammu province regional imbalances, including imbalances in allotment of funds, establishment of colleges and other educational institutions, employment, representation in the assembly and so on. On the other hand, the National Panthers Students Union has also become quite pro-active. It has started a campaign against those responsible for the inordinate delay in the establishment of Jammu Central University. It has been mobilizing the student community and preparing the ground for a full-scale movement on the issue since more than 20 days. It has already organized a few quite impressive demonstrations and motivated students of a few colleges to boycott classes and join the movement. It is the activities of the NPSU that has forced even the ABVP, a student organ of RSS, and the BJP, which remained indifferent for quite sometime, to express solidarity with the cause and indicate their intention to take up the issue. However, to report all this is not to suggest that the JKNPP leadership is consistent in its approach or it is committed to all the issues it took during the past few months, particularly since April this year. For example, the JKNPP leadership had declared in the first week of May with much fanfare its decision to fight out those responsible for the collapse of the Dogra certificate order. It remained a mere declaration. The party didn't do anything as far as this issue was concerned, except holding a couple of demonstrations here and there. It didn't even take on those who, instead of uniting the Dogras of Jammu province (all the original inhabitants of the Jammu province are Dogras), tried to divide them and express views on the Dogra certificate issue which were outrageous, politically-motivated and Kashmir-centric. It appears the JKNPP has forgotten the Dogra certificate issue which is very dear to the Dogras. It is for the party leadership to educate the public opinion about what they think about this issue. However, the fact remains that even the bitter critics of the JKNPP leadership have started appreciating its activities. If the present trend continues for some more time, there is the possibility of the JKNPP extending its sphere of influence beyond Ram Nagar, Udhampur and Samba assembly constituencies. |
