Kulgam rape case Family contradicts `sick' victim | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 23: The Special Investigative Team (SIT) today sought further forensic opinion in Kulgam rape case when the family of the ` victim' denied she had been raped. The husband and mother-in-law of Ruqaya told the SIT that she went missing on the morning of July 20 and not on July 19 evening. "She is mentally sick and has been taking medicines for that regularly", Ruqaya's husband told the probing team. This was confirmed by other family members. Amina Bi, the mother -in-law of the victim also denied presence of uniformed men in the area on the day Ruqaya claimed she was raped. "I cannot say whether she was raped or not. She alone can say that", Amina said. Amina said Ruqaya had gone to the village spring at 7am on Wednesday (July 20) and did not return till late in the evening. "We sent people in different directions but could not find her. She returned home the next day," she said. When asked about her overnight absence, Ruqaya started beating her chest. The family members thought she had pain in the chest and was rushed to Manzgam hospital. Amina said Ruqaya told the doctor that she was raped. Ruqaya, however, could say why she did not cry for help when the dhok where she was allegedly raped was not far away. Medical examination had ruled out rape. However, as a precautionary measure, the vaginal swabs of Ruqaya have been sent for further Forensic tests. The news of Ruqaya's alleged rape evoked severe reaction across Kashmir. Hurriyat (G) chairman called for general strike Saturday. People clashed with police at kulgam resulting into injuries to six persons. The army had also ordered an internal enquiry. The police have registered a case against unknown people |
