Glorifying Omar at Sher-e-Kashmir's cost? | CM's car goes to Official Spokesman's head! | | Early Times Report Srinagar, July 24: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah added yet another fether to his cap today by becoming the first ever Chief Minister to visit Gurez by road. A `jubliant' official spokesman in a bid to glorify Omar for this `remarkable' feat did cast aspersions on Omar's predecessors two of whom happen to be his grandfather and father. The Sheikh family ruled Kashmir for 32 years. This includes three year regime of Ghulam Muhamamd Shah who dethroned Dr Farooq in 1984. So neither Sher-e-Kashmir nor Dr Farooq dared to travel to Gurez in a car. Even Ghulam Muhammad Shah who is considered a better administrator and a tough person did not do it, or to put it plainly could not do it. Giving reasons for travelling in a car, Omar said the purpose behind his visiting Gurez by road was to assess the condition of the road and get first hand appraisal of development works by interacting with the people at various places. So finally a Chief Minister has admitted that people cannot be reached by travelling in aeroplanes and helicopters. Omar had a first hand assessment of the situation when he preferred to travel in a car. Had he travelled in a helicopter like his father and grandfather, he would never know problems faced by the people living in this remote but beautiful area. The Chief Minister said that the natural beauty of Gurez needed to be showcased for global tourism, he stressed on protecting the environment and ecology of the area at any cost. He said that the promotion of tourism is also related to good roads. Impressed by Omar's Gurez adventure, a scribe from Budgam district invited the Chief Minister for a similar drive to Yousmarg. It (Yousmarg) is a beautiful place in district Budgam. A dilapidated road mocks at the signboards of Yousmarg Development Authority that welcome the tourists to the lush green meadow. "Omar better drive to yousmarg to see the condition of road himself. If his grandfather could not do it, if his father did not do it; he must come forward and do it if he believes good roads can promote tourism." |
